About Healthy Active Maori Lifestyles
What We Do

Hillary Commission
He Oranga Poutama

He Oranga Poutama is an innovative pilot project to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of Maori communities through the medium of sport and recreation. The project is based on a Maori community initiative which responds to what many communities say they want.

11 sports coordinators or kaiwhakahaere, are working throughout New Zealand to assist Iwi in the development of their own programmes and events. Typically this takes place at the marae. Examples of activities are line dancing, eeling, tennis and waka ama. Events include inter-Iwi sports days, Marae-to-Marae fun runs, and Iwi Walks.

He Oranga Poutama is a joint venture project. The Hillary Commission, Community Employment Group and Te Puni Kokiri fund the programme. The agencies believe that this combined approach will promote health messages and create employment opportunities through the medium of sport and active leisure.
