Maori have always enjoyed gathering
together in a whanau environment, and traditionally this takes place at the Marae.
The Iwi grant is a Hillary Commission initiative to encourage this process. It
provides funding to help with the organisation of events that include a component
of sport. These events can include traditional Maori activities, such as eeling,
taiaha and kapa haka. Events using this funding include the Maori surf nationals,
the Maniapoto festival, the Raglan Waka Ama competition
and the Wanganui river tira hoe waka.
Grants can be
applied for throughout the year.
