About Us

The Hillary Commission is the crown agency responsible for supporting sport and active living in New Zealand. We aim to encourage and create opportunities for all New Zealanders to be physically active. We will also develop sport so that all participants can reach their potential and our best athletes achieve international honours. The Hillary Commission has up to nine Commissioners and is based in Wellington. We are funded by the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board and the Government.


Track Record

Performance highlights 1998/99

man walking dogPush Play - the message that 30 minutes physical activity each day is beneficial has been packaged, promoted and launched in 43 centres

SportsMark - a quality standard for the delivery of sport in primary schools and national bodies has been developed and widely welcomed

Coaches Count - entering its third successful year, Coaches Count now has resources tailored to encourage, improve and reward coaches in 20 sports

Schools and clubs helping each other - almost half of secondary schools have formal links with 5 or more local sports clubs. This has been a Commission priority

Community Sport Fund - grants averaging $1350 to promote coaching and young people's sport in 4,258 sports clubs and active leisure organisations

He Oranga Poutama - Maori sport and active leisure thriving in 200 marae settings.

Sport Leader - 35,000 young people enrolled to become community leaders through sport

KiwiWalks - now 60 local councils and conservancies promote quick and easy walking tracks for busy people

No Exceptions - policy developed and distributed to sport organisations so that everyone has access to the benefits of sport, no matter their ability

Research - shows that 66% of New Zealanders lead healthy active lifestyles

FairPlay - 92% of people surveyed are aware of the principles and benefits of FairPlay
