Priya Bhika

Priya started playing hockey when she was 8 years old. She loved going to watch her Mum and Dad play and liked the game. "I guess I was brought up with it really, but it was still something new and exciting to do and I had friends in the team."

After more than ten years later Priya still enjoys the game. "I absolutely still love hockey, I love the friends that I've made and the people that I keep in contact with. It's great to see everyone regularly, but I also love the competitive side to it. I enjoy challenging myself."

Priya is training hard at the moment for two big tournaments. This month Priya will play in the National Under 21 Hockey Championships and then she is off to Argentina for the Junior World Cup. "It's quite rewarding at rep level. I love going away, I've been overseas heaps with hockey. I've been lucky with the teams I've been in, we've been to Australia heaps, Argentina and Chile."

Priya has achieved many great things in hockey including winning the first Carrillon Club Leilani Read Scholarship but her most memorable experience was playing for New Zealand and hearing the national anthem play for the first time. "I was standing on the field listening to the anthem and looking at the New Zealand flag it was great!"
